Annual General Meeting Strategy | Shareholder Engagement & AGM Insights

AGM Strategy for Stronger Shareholder Engagement

In a recent conversation hosted by Christopher P. Skroupa, Founder & CEO of Skytop Media Group, InvestorCom President & CEO John Glenn Grau shared expert insights on AGM strategy and the evolving dynamics of shareholder engagement.

As companies prepare for increasingly complex proxy seasons, a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) requires more than just execution—it demands a proactive, year-round approach to shareholder communication and visibility.

A core pillar of effective AGM execution is preparation. A strong AGM strategy begins with year-round preparation, including continuous shareholder surveillance and ownership tracking well in advance of the record date. Doing so enables companies to better understand their investor base and anticipate voting behavior.

Equally important is knowing who your shareholders truly are. An effective AGM strategy also requires understanding beneficial ownership, going beyond NOBO lists to identify investors holding shares through banks and custodians. These underlying investors, often not immediately visible, play a significant role in voting outcomes and overall engagement.

Modern shareholder outreach also requires a multi-channel approach. Traditional methods such as mail, email, and phone outreach remain essential, but today’s investors increasingly expect seamless access to information through investor relations websites and digital platforms. A well-executed Annual General Meeting strategy meets shareholders where they are, combining traditional and digital engagement channels.

Above all, simplicity is a competitive advantage. Ultimately, a simplified AGM strategy drives stronger engagement. Even within a highly regulated environment, companies that make it easy for shareholders to access information, ask questions, and vote effectively foster greater trust, participation, and credibility.

As John Glenn Grau noted, “AGMs are complex by design. But simplifying the experience for investors is where confidence and strong engagement come from.”

Mastering both the message and the mechanics is what transforms an AGM from a procedural requirement into a strategic opportunity for alignment and trust.
